Drainage

Without proper drainage systems, most of Spring Lake would be uninhabitable. The Spring Lake Improvement District utilizes various systems to maintain the canals and ensure that flooding is controlled. The pump station, originally built in the 70's, is the backbone to our flood control and is maintained on a daily basis. Major upgrading and maintenance will take place in 2010. Tours of the pumping station are available by contacting the District Office and making a request. The pump station is located in a Restricted Area and the public is prohibited from access.

Flood Control

• Drains approximately 3,324 acres
• 200 acres of canal surface
• 17.1 miles of canal network
• Gravity drainage through water control structure West to East to Pump Station

Pump Station

• Discharges into Arbuckle Creek
• Has two automated electrically driven pumps
• Has two diesel driven pumps for emergency measures
• Each pump is capable of pumping 65,000 gallons/minute, with total pumping capacity of 260,000 gallons/minute
• Designed usage for normal elevation maintenance requires the operation of one pump for approximately 3.5 hours, with
• amount of rainfall determining the frequency of running times
• Spring Lake Improvement District maintains the pump station

Dikes

• Spring Lake Improvement District maintains and mows approximately 4 miles of dikes.
• The Dikes protect portions of the District from Arbuckle Creek flood waters.
• The Spring Lake Improvement District has an Aquatic Weed program to keep waterways free of major aquatic weed buildup.
• We use environmentally safe chemicals and procedures as well as mechanical removal (Drag Lines, Backhoes, Dozers).
• The District also uses Triploid Grass Carp.
