With all the recent rains, mosquito season has arrived! The District has a good supply of spray chemicals that are approved by the State Department of Agriculture. We have five staff members certified to spray for mosquitoes, and you will see the spraying truck towards the sunset hours. The State mandates that you cannot have a set schedule for mosquito spraying; it is complaint driven. If you want to request mosquito spraying you can go to our website at www.springlakefl.com, click on Request Mosquito Spraying on top of the home page, and in the yellow box that appears, the bottom line is the Request for service that you will click on. Fill in the information and hit send. You can also phone the office at 655-1715. There are still a limited number of mosquito pellets available Free of charge at the District Office for you to put in  standing water areas. Mosquito Control assessments are on all water bills. As of June 15th there are 867 people who receive updates and news about the District via e-mail blasts. This communication is meant to keep residents updated on important items that affect them, and we do not send them out unless they are relevant. We all get many unwanted e-mails, and the District is respectful of that. If you want to receive our e-mail blasts, go to the bottom of the home page and next to the login you will see REGISTER. Simply go to that area, fill in the information, and you will receive the blasts. As always, if you need assistance call our office at 863-655-1715 or stop in.

While the heavy rains have helped with drought conditions, the ground is still so dry that minor localized flooding in our swales and ditches will be occurring. All control structures are open, the pump station is operating for the first time in several months, the canal system is discharging properly, and the recently completed Storm Water Treatment Area is able to retain and store millions of gallons. Rainfall will produce storm water build-up in the secondary retention areas of swales and drainage ditches. While caution should be used when walking, biking, or driving through these areas, the natural progression of discharge will make this a temporary issue. Our system works; just be patient as the water drains and discharges into the canals, ponds, and lakes. Finally, if there are culverts in front of your house help monitor any debris that may get caught in them and have water back-up; your help is appreciated.

The South Florida Water Management District has adopted the water restrictions approved by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and applies to ALL OF HIGHLANDS COUNTY. Spring Lake residents need to be aware of the following watering schedule that applies to utility supplied water, wells, and pumps that are in canals and ponds. The water schedule is as follows:If your address ends in zero or 1, you may ONLY irrigate on Mondays; addresses ending in 2 or 3, Tuesday; 4 or 5, Wednesday; 6 or 7, Thursday; 8 or 9, Friday. Do your part, help conserve.

Surveying for the new and modern waste water treatment plant has been completed and only a few more tests remain on the site, located just west of Thunder Road between Rt. 98 and Duane Palmer Blvd. The construction plans and budget will be completed by June 26th for submission to the State Revolving Fund. The District is in line to receive full funding for the project with a 30 year no interest loan. The large, 7 acre plat allows for a minimum 100 ft. buffer on all sides with the vast majority of trees remaining. The entrance off Duane Palmer Blvd. will be used by our District trucks for access to the plant. A full engineering report on the plant is available for public review in the District office.

The first draft of the Fiscal Year 2018 District Budget will be presented to the Board at their June 21st meeting for discussion. The second draft will be presented at the July 12th meeting, and a Public Hearing will be held on August 9th. The Public is welcome to attend any and all meetings and provide input and comments to the Board during this important annual process. If you cannot attend the meetings you can access the agenda and minutes of the meetings on this web site.
